Edwin Hubert Evans 1896-1919
Edwin Hubert Evans was born on October 11, 1860 to parents James Madison and Elizabeth Evans of Taunton. He married Ella Sturgis on November 8, 1883. They had two children, but one died during childhood. Edwin spent much of his youth working in the seafaring trade and traveling throughout the East Coast and the Caribbean. He eventually returned to Taunton and joined the police department in 1884. He served for five years before being named head of the department. Originally, this position was called the City Marshall, but was changed to Police Chief during Evans’ tenure.
