Andrew Wright 1878-1896
Andrew Wright was born in Fall River in 1832. The 1860 census lists his occupation as machinist. In 1862, he enlisted in the army at the rank of captain, and was commissioned as an officer in Company D, Massachusetts 3rd Infantry Regiment in September 1862. He mustered out on June 26, 1863. After the Civil War, he went into law enforcement and was City Marshal by 1870. The Taunton Directory listed Wright as the jail keeper from 1888-1895. The jail was located in Taunton at this point. Andrew Wright was Sheriff during the infamous Lizzie Borden trial. He and his wife, Mary Irving, acted as primary comforters to Lizzie while she was incarcerated and throughout her trial. |
