On December 17, 2009, Sheriff Hodgson donated a Police Motorcycle to the Acushnet Police Department. On hand to accept the keys and Title was Police Chief Michael Alves.
“Last spring, the finance committee asked me to look into the cost of purchasing a motorcycle in an effort to reduce carbon footprints. At the time, we were looking at an estimated cost of $20,000.00. We applied for several grants, but were unsuccessful. Recently however, Sheriff Thomas Hodgson offered to donate a motorcycle to our department." Chief Alves said.
Chief Alves also stated, “This motorcycle will be the first for the town of Acushnet. We are very excited about this bike, and very glad we can add this to our department. We at the Police Department would like to thank Sheriff Hodgson for his generosity. The Sheriff has helped our town in the past by donating equipment to our Fire Department.
“The Motorcycle gives us tactical uses we have not had in the past. In addition, the motorcycle will also bring about employee retention, something that is good for our department. With time, more of our officers will become qualified to operate the motorcycle."
